Welcome to the School of Chemistry & Physics
UKZN’s School of Chemistry and Physics is one of five Schools in the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science. It is located predominantly on the Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses, with a small Engineering service presence on Howard College.
It has a staff complement of 148 academic and support staff , houses approximately 600 undergraduate students and boasts a postgraduate component of 250, engaged in Honours, Masters, PhD and Postdoctoral research.
The School’s cutting -edge laboratories and research equipment compare favourably with the best in the world. Caring and enthusiastic lecturers ensure that students emerge highly employable, with a rich university experience and an excellent degree in Chemistry or Physics to their name.
Award for Quantum Technology Scientist s Achievements
Dr Adriana Marais has been awarded the prestigious Meiring Naudé Medal by the Royal Society of South Africa (RSSAf) for her extraordinary achievements as a young scientist.
Astrophysics Post Graduate Research Day Winners
Post Graduate Research winners won an international conference to present their work.

Professor Rienk van Grondelle recently delivered a public lecture on the Quantum Design of Photosynthesis.
